Acai Berry Degradation: A Real Problem

Annie on Jan 29th 2009

If think that getting acai berry to your doorstep is an easy process, then you’re sorely mistaken. There is much more to just picking the berry and and liquidizing it into a handy juice form. Read on.

Firstly you’ve got to get the acai berry itself, and since the 30m palm on which it grows is only found in the tropical regions of South and Central America, this is no mean feat. Once you’ve got the acai berry — or more accurately once you’ve coaxed one of the native populations to shimmy up and get some of the fruit for you — then you’ve got to store it and transport it.

Unfortunately even storage and transportation are pretty difficult techniques to master. The problem now is that, once picked, the acai berry tends to deteriorate very quickly indeed. In a matter of hours it will be a gooey mush which is little use to anyone. Now is the time to think very hard — and very quickly — about how you’re going to sell the acai berry product. You’ve got to get it into that form now.

So, you’ve juiced it, made it into a preserve, made some capsules out of it or pulped it and freeze dried it. Now comes the easy part: traveling by road out of the forest and across an entire continent!
