    Elliott's Story

A native Texan, Elliott Smith began writing songs at the age of fourteen. Years into honing his craft and after many relocations accross the midwest, Elliott became a notable fixture in Portland's thriving music scene. He gained notoreity for his spectacular songwriting skills with hometown boys Heatmiser. The band quickly gained their own fame as well, and debuted in 1993 with Dead Air. Heatmiser continued to rock audiences and stereos alike with Yellow No. 5, Cop & Speeder and 1996's posthumous Mic City Sons. That same year also saw the disbanding of Heatmiser, which gave Elliott the impetus to throw himself into his solo career, a career that had been blossoming since his '94 solo release, Roman Candle. Audiences were struck by that soft and starkly beautiful record of introspection and heartache, themes that would eventually become part of Elliott's signature sound. He followed up with an even more impressive self-titled record in 1995 on Kill Rock Stars, which gave him the exposure that Cavity Search records couldn't. In 1997 Elliott would put out the majestic Either/Or, a record that, for better or worse, give him a taste of the fame that 1998's incredibly successful XO earned him. XO, his debut with Dreamworks, highlighted Elliott at a turning point in his solo career. Where his previous albums were strictly love affairs between his voice and guitars, Elliott now incorporated more textured instrumentation.

Portland, Oregon's greatest commodityIn 1998, Elliott's "Miss Misery" was (surprisingly) nominated for an Oscar as part of the "Good Will Hunting" soundtrack. Though he didn't win, he did play the tune on the awards show that night, and broadcast into millions of living rooms that night he quickly became a household name. Elliott's shows were starting to sell out just as his record sales rose. He had a major label behind him now; whether he liked it or not, he was now a full-blown rock star. Elliott's latest album, Figure 8, expounds further on the instrumentation and intricate song structures that flourished throughout XO. We all can't wait to see what he does next.

Gwen Howell loves Elliott too. She had this to say: "Elliott Smith's voice is so otherworldly and beautiful. Anybody who hears him and isn't moved may be lacking a soul. He's just so human and frail. You want to just hold him and comfort him when you hear those heartbreaking lyrics."

Nathalie Toye wrote: "I adore Elliott Smith. His music means so much to me. His songs have passion, conviction, honesty and humor - all with very sweet, Beatlesesque harmonies. I could sit here all day long and try to explain why I love his music so much, but it just takes away from my enjoyment of it. I just love to zone out and listen to my all-time favorite album, Either/Or."
