Notes:
Over three decades of cruel obscurity Loren MazzaCane Connors has sustained his position as a master of his instrument. He has issued thirty-odd albums, many on his own labels and under a variety of pseudonyms, that showcase a singular compositional sense that draws from the blues, Bach, electric jazz, and Irish folk music, but doesn't really sound like any of them. Connors's records fall into three categories; narrative suites for overdubbed guitars, guitar and voice duets with his wife Suzanne Langille, and improvised encounters with other guitarists. In 1992 Connors was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease; since then his music has gotten darker, sparser, and louder.

Loren MazzaCane Connors' music doesn't reach out. To appreciate it you have to approach it on its own terms, allowing it time to give up its secrets. Despite listening to his music for years, I was initially underwhelmed by the twenty brief, nameless (save one) instrumentals that make up Airs - they were just too still. But the more I listened, the more I heard, and now I don't want to stop.

After several weeks of repeated play Airs stands revealed as one of the most melodic efforts of Connors' long career; each piece is a jewel-like miniature woven out of unhurried, contrapuntal parts that lock together with the inexorable logic of Bach's "Two- And Three-Part Inventions." The guitarist eschews the distortion and effects that have marked many of his other recent efforts in favor of clean-toned, reverberant leads and gently strummed, almost disassembled accompanying chords. The accumulated Airs evoke a melancholy wrung dry of sentimentality, a clear-eyed examination of the darkness that lurks behind every light.
