at a glance...

Luna
Hometown: New York, NY
First Recordings: 1992

Personnel:
Dean Wareham -guitar, vocals
Lee Wall -drums, percussion
Justin Harwood -bass
Sean Eden -guitar

Notes:
Following the demise of Galaxie 500 in 1991, Dean Wareham formed Luna. Other members include Justin Harwood of New Zealand's The Chills and Sean Eden. The original line-up included Stanley Demeski on drums who was replaced in summer 1996 with Lee Wall of the band 44. The New York four-piece has released five albums since 1993: Lunapark, Bewitched, Penthouse, Pup Tent and The Days of Our Nights. They have also contributed to the "I Shot Andy Warhol" and "Mr. Jealousy" soundtracks. Dropped earlier this year from Elektra, the band signed this fall with Jericho Records.

Luna have been dubbed "the best band in the world that no-one has ever heard of" by Rolling Stone. You're about to hear about them. No more exuses.

The band's latest release, The Days of Our Nights, almost didn't make it to US shelves. Elektra dropped the band in May, weeks before the album's release date. After a summer of label shopping, Luna signed with Jericho records to the relief of a great many stateside fans who dreaded having to spend $30 on the Beggars Banquet UK import.

With Days, Luna continue to create music that captures melancholic moods at their most beautiful, and weave their songs with pain and nostalgia, lust and love. Dean Wareham's witty lyrics are gorgeously backdropped by the music, which delves into string arrangements and vocal harmonies.

"Dear Diary," and "Superfreaky Memories," are two of the best tracks on this album. The former is a lovely romp about Wareham's pursuit of the ever elusive sexy woman. "Superfreaky Memories" conjures up the past and its effect (or lack thereof) on the future.

While at first I thought this album was weaker than other Luna creations, it grew on me and convinced me otherwise. The band pull out all the stops at the end, "Lunafying" Guns 'n Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine." And if that's not nostalgia, I don't know what is.
