Notes:
Young achieved initial fame as a member of Buffalo Springfield, who disbanded in 1968. In 1969 he released two records, Neil Young, and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, which firmly established his merit as a solo artist. In 1970, he joined David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Steven Stills to make Deja Vu, later devoting himself to making records with his most consistent backing band, Crazy Horse (Billy Talbot, bass; Ralph Molina, drums; Danny Whitten, guitar (d 1972); Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, guitar), along with a rotating cast of musicians that continue to back his efforts to this day. Young is comparable only to Bob Dylan in terms of his contributions to songwriting and rock n' roll, and is still an important and vital performer who challenges the status quo and his own reputation with an alarming regularity.

A lot of people waited a long time for Neil Young to make this record, and he didn't disappoint them. Comes A Time returned him to the open-hearted, romantic country-rock he abandoned after After The Goldrush.

He cut most of it in Nashville with a cast of thousands (well, dozens) that he dubbed the Gone With The Wind Orchestra. They bathed this especially tender collection of melodies in lush strings and gently strummed acoustic guitars. Nicolette Larson's harmonies, Rufus Thibodeaux's jaunty fiddle, and Ben Keith's weepy pedal steel licks sweetened the poignancy of the title tune, "Field of Opportunity," and the lush ballad "Goin' Back." But Young's lyrics, which include clear-eyed depictions of the disappointment ("Already One") and fear ("Peace of Mind") that lurk behind love, balance the sugar with a few spikes, and just when the record threatens to get too soft, the lusty, loopy rocker "Motorycycle Mama" shows up to spill beer on the cushy carpet. This is one soft and sensitive disc that even a cynic can love.
